River Blackwater and River Loddon

Brief description of fishery:

Swallowfield Fishing Club has approximately 1.4km of the River Blackwater and approximately 1.6km of the River Loddon within the grounds of Swallowfield Park. The rivers contain a variety of coarse fish including Barbel, Chub, Roach, Dace, Bream, Perch & Pike along with a good head of Wild Brown Trout.

In years gone by barbel have been caught in excess of 15lb, but as with a number of catchments, the barbel fishing has become more challenging. However, if you are patient and prepared to explore the waters your efforts will be rewarded.

The silverfish in the rivers make great sport with chub in excess of 6lb and perch to 3lb.

Swallowfield is rich in wildlife and when sitting quietly on the banks you will see kingfishers and a number of birds of prey including barn owls and deer.

Club working parties create a number of obvious swims along the banks of the rivers but feel free to find yourself a spot nestled in the reeds We just ask that you are respectful of the environment and ecosystem and keep any disturbance to a minimum.

Night fishing is permitted on the river but no bivvies or tents. Fires are not permitted.

In recent years the club has worked hard to improve the fishery and the recruitment and retention of fish. Through grants and a volunteer workforce we have regular stockings, have introduced new gravel spawning beds, and established two new backwaters.

More enhancement projects are planned for the future and we encourage club members to get involved.
